Instead of adding paint onto a working base, the young artist Lena Schmidt scratches her pictures with a thin knife out of old wooden surfaces. Indeed, this scratch-technique, developed by the artist some years ago, is absolutely unique. This way, she emphasizes the wooden materiality and at the same time creates an almost mystique parallel world. Lena Schmidt calls her artworks urbanscapes – they refer to places which generate themselves from non-places, from the transit zones of the city: Traffic interchanges, road systems, crossroads, and deserted old industrial brick buildings. By moving them into the spotlight the artist takes the viewer into a bewildering play of reality and imagery, identity and relation and thus ties us to her pictures.
